We, America, the one country who fought so hard to stay out of another World War, is now fighting two wars; the World War in Europe, and the War in the Pacific. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, 80,000 U.S. and Filipino troops invaded Japan. Roosevelt put General Douglas MacArthur in command of the Allied forces on the islands of the Philippines. But on March 11, 1942, a little over a year after the invasion of Japan, MacArthur was ordered to retreat and leave the Philippines with his family (Danzer et al. 579). Roosevelt’s intention to remove MacArthur was because the Allied troops turned their backs to Baatan. As MacArthur was leaving the island, he announced, “I shall return.” I am the first to report that after Japan’s first loss on land at Guadalcanal, U.S. troops were ordered to return. In the October of 1944, 178,000 Allied troops and 738 ships invaded Leyte Island in the Philippines (Danzer et al. 581). MacArthur was once again in command of the troops, and when he stepped ashore onto Filipino soil, he said, “People of the Philippines: I have returned.” (Danzer et al. 581). The general showed that he was back and was as willing to fight as ever. MacArthur’s next mission was to capture the island of Iwo Jima. This capture was extremely crucial to the War in the Pacific because the U.S Navy knew that the island would make a beneficial naval base. My sources tell me that there were about 6,000 casualties of the U.S. Marines. This number is overwhelming but compared to the 200 Japanese that survived this number is incredible (Empereur 2). Because of his heroic efforts across the seas, MacArthur was awarded the Medal of Honor ("General Douglas MacArthur" 4). Without the genius of General Douglas MacArthur, the invasions and attacks in Japan would have not been successful. If there is one thing certain about this War in the Pacific, it is the fact that General Douglas MacArthur will go down in history as the greatest and most intelligent strategist in all of World War II.
